So I was browsing through Steam recently when I came across a free to play VR game called Propagation VR. At first I was skeptical but it actually turned out to be a really enjoyable and memorable albeit a very short experience that I want to share with you in this video! Propagation VR is a very short but extremely enjoyable zombie survival game where you’ve got to fend off waves of massive spiders and a variety of zombies using a combination of your fists, a shotgun and a pistol, in order to reach the boss and complete the game. It only takes about half an hour to play through in total and there’s only 2 guns in the game, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you’ve got a VR headset laying around.

It begins with a brief but informative tutorial that explains the basic controls and gives you a bit of target practice which is useful if you’re new to virtual reality but it’ll all feel pretty familiar if you’ve played a VR fps game before.

Once you’re done with the tutorial you find yourself alone in a dark subway station surrounded by litter and a couple of inoperable trains. It isn’t long until you hear distant groaning from the first zombie though, and from there your situation only gets worse!

You can’t walk around the subway on your own, nor can you run and hide behind a bench and cry like a baby when you get scared… trust me I tried… I suppose you could always take your headset off first and hide behind your sofa and cry but that seems to defeat the purpose of running and hiding in the first place…

Anyway you’re just sort of stood still in the middle of the open platform with nowhere to hide and the zombies slowly make their way over to you from all sides which can definitely be a bit unnerving when you start getting overwhelmed and they walk or crawl up to you and start trying to rip you to shreds and eat your brains or all the other fun things zombies like to do in their spare time.

Thankfully the sound design is awesome and you’re easily able to hear if something’s creeping up on your from behind which gives you a chance to blow their head off before they get close. I was able to instinctively pin point the exact location of incoming enemies without even thinking about it which really added to the immersion and made me believe I was in a subway fighting for my life.

The visuals are pretty impressive too and compliment the sound effects well… It’s fairly dark throughout the whole game though light enough to be able to see, but you need to use both sight and sound if you want to survive, especially on the harder difficulties.

The zombies look pale and they walk around all deformed and broken just as I expect you would if you were… well you know, undead. There isn’t much light down in the subway especially while the power’s off, but the lighting effects are really well done so you can just about make out a shadow of something coming towards you from the darkness, enough to scare your pants off, but not quite enough to get a good head shot.

Thankfully you’ve got a handy little flashlight attached to your pistol to bring light to the darkness, though that might not always be a good idea, but to avoid spoilers I’ll just have to let you figure that one out for yourself.

As I mentioned earlier there’s only 3 weapons in the game, a pump action shotgun, a pistol of some sort and of course the real guns… Your fists. Seriously you have to punch really hard if you want to do any meaningful damage, it’s actually pretty good exercise! At least it was for me but I’m pretty weak so…

*Clears throat* Both the shotgun and the pistol look and feel fantastic and the gun play was definitely my favorite part of the experience. Aiming, shooting and reloading feels completely natural and you can make out the tiniest details on the gun models without it looking blurry. Your pistol’s attached to a gun belt on your waste along with unlimited ammo for both guns on the opposite side of the belt, and your shotgun’s on your back.

Grabbing the weapons and ammo and inserting the magazine and cartridges while reloading feels effortless but realistic and you feel like a real bad ass when you’re somehow reloading 1 cartridge at a time between shots as you fend off enormous man eating spiders and their brood.
