This is my review and analysis of Pokemon Black and White for the Nintendo DS. Pokemon Black and White did address one problem I noticed in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. With generation four, I thought it was ridiculous for Cyrus to want to destroy the world over a porblem which didn’t seem to exist. I also thought the protagonist and the friends of the protagonist should have presented a counterargument to everything the villain Cyrus claimed. In Pokemon Black and White, the friends of the protagonist do present a counterargument to what the villainous Team Plasma claims, but Team Plasma is still doing everything in part to solve a problem which doesn’t exist.

The friends of the protagonist unfortunately used a weak counterargument. Characters constantly repeat, “Everyone has his or her own opinion.” But that by itself is not a response to Team Plasma claiming that humans mistreat Pokemon. If anything, it seemed like Gamefreak was avoiding the issue. It was very frustrating, because if Gamefreak didn’t want to talk about this topic, they could have made the game about any other topic in the world.

Regarding the gameplay, by Pokemon Black and White, the battle system had been refined almost to the system we know today. But Black and White made one big, important change. In generation five, TMs were no longer single use. Prior to this, Pokemon could learn moves by leveling up, or by using Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs). HMs never broke, but were hard to forget in a game where the player often needs to make the Pokemon forget attacks. TMs taught a large variety of often useful attacks and could be forgotten whenever the player chose. But TMs could typically only be used once, versus HMs which could be used as often as the player wanted. There was a bit of strategy involving in choosing whether to use a TM or an HM. In Pokemon Black and White, TMs could now be used as many times as the player wanted. This removed that bit of strategy, but the sacrifice was well worth it. In earlier Pokemon games, I rarely used TMs regardless of how useful these were, because I kept asking myself which was the best Pokemon to learn it. Now, I used TMs all the time to try teaching different Pokemon different attacks. That made the game much more fun.
