In this review, I will analyze the second generation of Pokemon: Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver, and Pokemon Crystal for the Nintendo Gameboy Color.

Pokemon Gold and Silver first implemented many mechanics that would become crucial for the main Pokemon series. The real time clock changes the appearance of the world as well as which Pokemon the player could capture, according to the actual time. For the first time, we saw shiny Pokemon. (If we were lucky!) Breeding Pokemon had a huge impact on competitive battles. Pokemon Crystal added a female protagonist for the young girls playing Pokemon. All subsequent games included the clock (though to a lesser extent in generation three), breeding Pokemon, shiny Pokemon, and two protagonists, boy and girl.

Finally, these Nintendo Gameboy Color games had two regions to explore, a distinction no other game in the main Pokemon series has. It would be fantastic some day to see another Pokemon game with two (or more) regions.

The conclusion of my critique is that Pokemon Gold and Silver are excellent sequels. Gold and Silver built on the foundation of Red and Blue, and added important improvements.
