In this video, I review and analyze Croc Legend of the Gobbos for the Playstation. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for the PS1 was actually the first video game I ever played. My cousin let me play Croc on his PS1 and in that moment I saw what a video game was. Croc has wonderful music and graphics, and the level design, while not quite as brilliant, is still decent.

The starting area in the first level is great. The music is amazing, the art style is adorable, and the level design teaches the player what he or she can expect throughout the rest of the game. There’s a well or sewer that leads to an underground area where the player has to use moving platforms to jump across lava for an extra life. There’s a box to break for white crystals, the most common collectible in the game, a Gobbo to rescue, and two enemies, one on the ground and another flying, for the player to defeat. Finally, this area has two floating platforms where one leads to a secret area. It’s a simple area, overall, but it introduces the player to many of the mechanics in Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.

Looking at the game now, however, I definitely think it has some problems with regard to the control scheme, which be unnecessarily difficult and more so as the game progresses. Vehicle style controls certainly aren’t uncommon for PS1 games. I’ve played other 3D platformers, like Bubsy 3D and Kingsley’s Adventure, and those used similar vehicle controls. This isn’t a problem unique to Croc. But there are also games, like the Crash Bandicoot or Spyro series, that had much better controls. (Admittedly Crash 2 and 3 as well as the entire Spyro series released after Croc.) The controls present a big hurdle to enjoying Croc Legend of the Gobbos, and it’s such a shame when so much of this PS1 classic is so great.
