2 years agoAddendum: I attempted to notify the company about the issues that I found in this review two days ago following the same process that I have used for the last 2 years. Instead of asking for clarification as they have always done, they decided to allow their PR/Official Discord mod to attack me on the official FB page of the company. Said person is now advocating that I be barred from being able to independently purchase products from the company. This is would be an unprecedented and highly anti-consumer move if done.
For the record, I have reviewed 15 products from this company and only didn't like 3. I even daily drive the release that came before this two weeks after the review.

2 years agoIt's was immediately obvious this would be a terrible product at the onset. I hope Anbernic fails miserably with this. I would say it's because I want them to learn a lesson on not violently excreting their products so quickly but I doubt they'll realize they made mistakes.

2 years agoWas looking at the CPU and RAM stuff, the 3050 is plenty plenty man enough to tackle gaming environments, in fact you could prob do all of it on 4gb of ram not 8 and its DDR4 too so a much bigger bus than DDR3. Where this would rock is running a Linux build. However the 3050 isn't a hyperthreading CPU and very little about the two Radeon cores on board the CPU either. The CPU itself is a very budget variant of a low end Ryzen 3, OK if you wanted to run PC version Cyberpunk on this it might struggle but the console version of Cyberpunk it would run fairly well due to the very compacted nature of a console's system and execution in comparison to Window's bloatyware environment.

2 years agoScrew Abernic. This goes to show that their quantity over quality got way over their heads. I even one time considered buying a handheld from them but after they up and personally attacked you, that doesn't roll with me. #GameOverAbernic

2 years agoI should have guessed from the picture of a sad Pikachu on the video thumbnail that you do not like this device. The way that Anbernic is trying to completely blacklist you is totally unfair and unprofessional. They need to re-evaluate their business practices if they still wanted to stay in the competition.

2 years agoThe screen problem is overvolting. I had a JXD S5800 which did that with the charger it came with. Swapped it out for another with the same stated volt/amp combo and problem gone. Problem with this Ambernic is, it is doing it wrong with chargers on the correct Volt/Amp combo which leads me to believe the chargers they’re testing with are cheap crap and the voltage level from the battery under charging is not at the level the touchscreen is expecting to receive.

2 years agoI think the only real problem with this device is that they are trying to sell it for $400. I think for half of that, it wouldn't be unacceptable, given how hard it is to get a Windows handheld right and the need to deal with x86 processors, Windows 10's potential sleep issues, wonky touch screen issues that don't appear on Android probably, etc. The only thing that really worries me about your review is that it might scare other Chinese companies away from attempting a Windows-based handheld at all. You have set the bar high here, and they might conclude it is safer to stick with Android because those wanting a Windows device are "too demanding," which is something I really don't want to see. I mean, there were things you had to call out… the sleep mode issues, the touchscreen issues, etc. You don't even touch on emulation performance until the very end, highlighting all the negatives before anyone has a chance to see that. But I think piling on with the emphasis on dual-channel memory not being used (that's obviously a cost-cutting measure and not something people usually even talk about with Android/ARM devices), complaining that they don't push the chipset as hard as they could to preserve battery life, and attacking every little aspect of the build quality, and comparing it to Android devices unfavorably, makes it sound like you really are frustrated and have it in for the device. The thing is, they really can't win on that front… if they pushed the chipset too hard, people would complain about fan noise, heat, and battery life. If they don't push it hard enough, they get people like you complaining about performance and how amazing things can be if you raise the TDP. In all honesty, I can kind of understand why they don't want you reviewing their products anymore. You hammered them on literally EVERYTHING and didn't throw any softballs. I'm not saying you were wrong to make the review you did if that's your honest opinion, but I am saying…you were pretty harsh on things that wouldn't have been that big a deal, like once you got a bad impression you just didn't hold back and poked everything you could to make sure no one buys it. And the thing is… if you are just using it as a Windows emulation handheld, similar to how the Android devices would be used, it would be fine for that use case as long you as you know what it can play and what it can't. I guess I'm just anxious about this because I am tired of Android handhelds being the only choice for emulating newer consoles than PS1, and the harshness of this review along with the full awareness of how demanding those who want Windows handhelds can with regard to little details that people buying Android devices tend to gloss over makes it more likely that we will get more Android handhelds and fewer Windows ones.

2 years agoWow, those thumbsticks look unusable down there. For that reason alone, I would never consider buying this product and I would probably question the quality of every Anbernic device.

2 years agoIt really is unfortunate that Anbernic started to drop off after trying to go for bigger devices and power. I feel like the RG351MP was the peak of their handhelds, but I have yet to get my hands on the 353 and I feel like I'd really love it.

2 years agoI guess this is the best X86 handheld you can get for this price. I don't mind paying $500 or $600 for something of higher quality, but most good quality X86 handhelds cost $1,000 or more. The exception would be the Steam Deck but they're hard to get, and I would prefer something slightly smaller.

2 years agoThey've got to know that this compromised hardware + overpriced approach is tanking their reputation though, surely? They can't be unaware of how poor this looks in comparison to the AYN stuff, not to mention the Steam Deck? I realize that their business models are different and i don't begrudge them a profit margin, plus i realize that the Chinese market operates its own way – but is this actually sustainable?
Do they just design and manufacture a relatively limited amount of units, get them on the market, ignore the Western Youtube comment section frustration when designing the next machine, launch their next maddeningly imperfect handheld, rinse/repeat…but crucially, do they just keep on making decent money from this business model? And if so, is it enough that they can carry on churning out flawed handhelds, ignoring the value of AYN and Valve's offerings? Surely not?

2 years agoI love these handhelds conceptually, but I'm in the spoiled crowd that has a ton of softmodded systems, everdrives, flash carts etc. For systems like ps2 and more modern, if I don't play on original hardware I often use pc streaming with a wifi-6 router and quite a lot of things can become a portable gaming system. :). If you haven't tried it yet, EmuVR is a great immersion tool to set the mood for retro gaming and escape the world properly for a few hours.
