In 2016, Pokemon Go was released for iOS and Android, and it became one of the most popular mobile games. At that time, Pokemon Go was more limited than the game we see on our cellphones in 2021, but this little Pokemon game created a Pokemania we hadn’t seen since the 90s.

And it was to be expected. Even in its simplest form, the games in the main Pokemon series have a sincerely fun formula, and when you combine this with the fact that almost everyone has a cellphone, whether iPhone or Android, and that Pokemon Go was (almost) free, it’s easy to see why Pokemon Go became a phenomenon.

I wrote this review back in 2016, so I apologize if I don’t talk about problems (and, being fair, positive aspects) introduced to the game later.

I seriously thought I wouldn’t have much fun playing Pokemon Go (for Android and iOS), since the game lacks aspects of the main Pokemon games that I really enjoy. But I was wrong. Pokemon Go almost perfected the process of capturing Pokemon in the real world. The augmented reality was implemented quite well, and I thought it was especially fun to be able to see a Pokemon in my house. As the mobile game that it is, Pokemon Go is ideal for those moments where we don’t have anything to do. I played it on the bus going to law school and it was an enjoyable way to pass the time.

The problem is that other areas of the game have been much less developed. The games in the main Pokemon series have a well balanced battle system, in the sense that the interface is simple enough for children to play and understand, and at the same time, the system has complex enough mechanics such that it is also fun for older players. The battle system in Pokemon Go, by comparison, was reduced to such basic elements that it’s a little boring.

But in the end, Pokemon Go is an imperfect, but still fun, mobile game.
