I enjoyed Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon for the Nintendo 3DS, so I decided to write this review and analysis. Super Mystery Dungeon fixed various problems from previous games in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series (for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS). This critique will focus largely on a story analysis of Super Mystery Dungeon. Characters were more believable and less superficial. The final lesson, that we need to accept our flaws in order to overcome those flaws, is especially relevant for the young audience of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

In this analysis we see Super Mystery Dungeon’s story has two weak points: the Pokemon friend and the final boss Dark Matter.

The Pokemon friend is notable for, on one hand, being able to see new possibilities, and on the other hand, lacking the wisdom to know when to act and when not to act. But the Pokemon friend never actually matures. Upon joining the Expedition Society, the Pokemon friend suddenly stops doing irresponsible things. This was a big missed opportunity for the story.

In Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, Dark Matter is more complicated to critique and analyze as a story element. I dislike associating light with good and dark with bad, as this follows old imperialist ideas that light skin is good and brown skin is bad. The concept is similar to the Bittercold in Gates to Infinity, and it suffers from many of the same defects. It’s ridiculous to talk about negative emotions destroying the world. It’s ridiculous to create a monster made up of negative emotions. Because these are Pokemon games. Even in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, the characters are rarely disrespectful to each other. The dialogue tries to convince us that the world is full of hate and that’s why Dark Matter and the Bittercold exist. But Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games barely show any hatred in the story world, and definitely not anything close to the atrocities we see in the real world.

The developers want to use an argument that makes sense in the real world. At the same time, since Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon specifically are made with a child audience in mind, they can’t include the kind of evil we see in the real world. The story in Super Mystery Dungeon has a final boss (Dark Matter) that emphasizes the evil in the world, despite the fictional worlds in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon being innocent and empty of such evil.

Even so, destroying Dark Matter by accepting it was a great idea that did work within the framework of Super Mystery Dungeon’s world and story. We have to accept ourselves, even our flaws, in order to overcome our flaws. It’s a profound moral. If Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon was consistent with this level of quality, it would be an excellent game.

The music and graphics are of a consistently high quality. From beginning to end, the music was fantastic. The graphics were better than the graphics in Gates to Infinity, also on the 3DS, which were already quite good. I don’t think the gameplay changed much, but the looplets and emeras added some variety to the game.
