Moanin' Monk (official video from Best of Tobin Mueller, Vol. 2)
Creating a medley of classic jazz standards can show the similarities of great composers. Mueller uses Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk" as a bridge in this jazz-blues arrangement of Art Blakey's biggest hit, "Moanin'". Written by Bobby Timmons, "Moanin'" served as The Messengers' theme song. Mueller and Grammy-winning guitarist Paul Nelson breath new life into it, adding their own personalities in another fabulous collaboration.
Completely remastered, with extra organ and guitar effects, the recording is one of 20 newly polished tracks from his retrospective compilation, "Best of Tobin Mueller, Vol. 2: Jazz Standards Reimagined". The synergy between keyboardist Mueller and Nelson is palpable.
The compilation presents Mueller's best jazz arrangements. He reimagines standards with an inventive flair while emphasizing the qualities that made the original a classic.
"One of the most diverse and talented jazz performers today presents a career spanning 5-volume compilation. Every track delivers. Contemporary jazz at its finest." - Jazziz magazine
"An amazing jazz amalgam that showcases the great players Mueller chose to record with. It captures at its zenith Mueller’s genius ability to dance in and out of motifs and themes while paying such great respect to the jazz composers he quotes. He makes the intertwining of the composer's intent with his own interpretation sound effortless, expansive, beautiful and awesome..." - John LaMantia, Downbeat Magazine
