Regal Cinemas is closing 39 much movie theaters crossed the United States.

The determination comes 4 months aft its genitor institution Cineworld filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after the pandemic devastated the manufacture and nationalist screenings.

In a filing this week, Cineworld said it is readying to cull leases for the 39 theaters opening February 15, redeeming the institution $22 cardinal annually.

Cineworld is moving with landlords to support its different theaters open. Around 500 remain, aft these closures and a erstwhile circular successful September 2022 that shuttered 12 locations.

“The debtors are hopeful that these negotiations volition pb to lease concessions and modifications that volition obviate the request for rejection and alteration further theatre sites to stay open,” Cineworld said successful this week’s filing.

When Cineworld announced its determination to record for bankruptcy past year, the institution said it wanted to shed debt. It expects filing for bankruptcy volition “strengthen its equilibrium expanse and supply the fiscal spot and flexibility to accelerate, and capitalize on, Cineworld’s strategy successful the cinema industry.”

Regal Cinemas is the United States’ second-largest theatre concatenation aft AMC Theaters, which has 950 locations according to its website.
