Northwestern University prof Samuel I. Stupp has received the 2022 Von Hippel Award, the highest grant awarded by the Materials Research Society (MRS). The prize recognizes “brilliance and originality of intellect, combined with imaginativeness that transcends the boundaries of accepted technological disciplines.”

Stupp is Board of Trustees Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Medicine and Biomedical Engineering astatine Northwestern, with appointments successful the McCormick School of Engineering, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He besides directs the Simpson Querrey Institute for BioNanotechnology (SQI), the Center for Regenerative Nanomedicine and the Center for Bio-Inspired Energy Science, an Energy Frontiers Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Stupp was recognized for his pioneering contributions to the improvement and knowing of a wide scope of molecularly designed supramolecular brushed materials that relation arsenic bioactive scaffolds successful regenerative medicine, matrices for photocatalytic enactment and stimuli-responsive robotic structures. He volition officially person the grant Nov. 30 astatine the MRS Fall Meeting successful Boston.

The grant is named aft Arthur von Hippel, who was a pioneer of dielectrics, semiconductors, ferromagnetics and ferroelectrics, and an aboriginal advocator of the interdisciplinary attack to materials research.

Stupp’s vocation has followed that example, arsenic his enactment combines materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine to make self-assembling materials for functions applicable to medicine and energy.

One of Stupp’s landmark achievements was the improvement of bioactive materials that tin awesome cells and beryllium utilized successful caller therapies for regenerative medicine. His enactment has led to the improvement of supramolecular biomaterials that mimic the earthy structures surrounding cells successful the quality assemblage and activate the indispensable signals to initiate the maturation of tissues specified arsenic bone, cartilage, muscle, humor vessels and the spinal cord, among others.

His latest breakthrough successful this country progressive harnessing the “supramolecular motion” wrong these biomaterials to reverse paralysis done regeneration aft terrible spinal cord injury.

In the tract of vigor materials, Stupp has designed bio-inspired supramolecular materials to make star fuels, frankincense mimicking the photosynthetic machinery of plants, brushed materials with photovoltaic capableness to person star vigor to energy and materials that grounds robotic functions.

The Von Hippel Award marks the latest successful a bid of caller honors for Stupp. Since 2020, helium has won the American Chemical Society’s Ralph F. Hirschmann Award successful Peptide Chemistry; the Nanoscience Prize from the International Society for Nanoscale Science, Computation, and Engineering; and has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Latin American Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica.

He besides is simply a subordinate of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Spanish Royal Academy and the National Academy of Inventors, and a chap of the MRS, the American Physical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
