Establishment of New Orleans

New Orleans is a known destination by the majority of the global population, but have you ever wondered how New Orleans came into existence? The Louisiana city was named the State's capital in 1723, although the decision to found New Orleans started in 1717 by John Law's Company of the West. The company saw its potential in terms of trade since it would be an excellent corridor for work in the Mississippi River Valley. After the site was suggested by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne (the then Governor of French Louisiana), the bush was cleared in 1718, and the process of building the city began. Although the process was expected to run smoothly, the engineers tasked to complete the city's construction encountered limited labour, mosquito infestation and two hurricanes struck in 1721 and 1722. The last challenge might have been the mightiest setback felt during the construction of New Orleans. However, that did not deter the engineers from drafting and completing the city's first plan, which consisted of the current French Quarter or Vieux Carre. In 1723, the capital of Louisiana was transferred from Biloxi to New Orleans.
